Degradation of cable insulation material by accelerated thermal radiation combined ageing

The degradation of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) sheets as a cable insulation material for nuclear power plants (NPP) was studied by accelerated thermal ageing, radiation ageing and thermal - radiation combined ageing. The oxidation of EPR proceeded with ageing and the decay of mechanical property was closely related to the content of oxidation products. The antioxidant as a stabilizer in EPR was effective for the thermal oxidation, but not for the radiation oxidation. For the thermal and radiation combined oxidation, the mechanical property and the content of oxidation products were different among the treatment sequences due to the decay of antioxidant. The lifetime of EPR cable is closely related to the remaining content of antioxidant, and the lifetime evaluation would be recommended by the reverse sequential combination (thermal ageing after radiation ageing).

Radiation resistivity of polymeric materials with data tables

Center for Proton Accelerator Facilities Planning group

JAERI-Data/Code 2003-015, 255 Pages, 2003/09

JAERI-Data-Code-2003-015.pdf:8.14MB

This document presents radiation resistivity of various polymeric materials with collected data tables that are the candidate materials to be used in the High Intensity Proton Accelerator Facility Project, J-PARC, which is to produce MW-class high power proton beams. The effect of radiation damage and deterioration by loss-beam or secondary particle beam influences the performance and the reliability of various instruments. The radiation damage consists of mechanical property, electrical property and gas-evolution property, and these properties depend entirely upon the kind of radiation, energy and dose intensity. The first part of this document methodically introduces the general feature of polymer and its radiation-induced deterioration mechanisms, and the second part of the document shows the compiled data for irradiation effects of polymeric materials. The sources of the data are the published reports from the worldwide references.

Architecture & maintenance of radiation resistant materials/equipments data base

Fukushima, Mineo; ; ; ;

PNC TN8410 93-192, 129 Pages, 1993/05

PNC-TN8410-93-192.pdf:3.02MB

There is much data available from irradiation tests on various electrical devices and materials simulating conditions found in nuclear plants. This data is very helpful for selecting the components to be used in unclear plant and for equipment design. A data base has been designed to provide easy acquisition and utilization of the test data. Basic items (target user, scope for collecting data, etc.), qualifications (purpose, function, etc.) and input data sheets have been considered in the design of the data base architecture. A prototype data base system architecture has been designed based on these considerations. After improvement and debugging of the prototype system, irradiation data from tests on semiconductors and polymers were entered into the data base using the data sheets. The data base architecture is designed to be simple so that beginners can easily use it. This system has about 1000 electronic equipments data and about 500 polymers data as of July, 1993. Radiation resistance of electronic equipment is now being evaluated using the data base system. Further improvements and rssolution of problems will be made so the data base system can provide optimum support to the design of equipment used in radiation anvironments.
